Firearms Training

It has been said that failing to train is training to fail. You wouldn't get your driver's license and then never drive a car until the day you needed to drive into the city for an important job interview. Likewise, the day you need your gun is not the best day to start reading the manual. On the contrary, training and practice are the hallmarks of success in any endeavor.

There is a lot of useful information on this site, other sites, in books, and videos, but none of those are a substitute for quality hands-on training. Why not start now?

Which Class Should I Take?

NRA certified instructors teach a variety of classes. The two most popular for beginners are:

  • Basic Pistol - A very thorough introduction to handguns. Live fire exercises are included. It runs about eight hours.
  • Home Firearms Safety - Focused on safely handling, loading, unloading, cleaning and storing all types of firearms. Does not include live fire. This course runs about four hours.

Other organizations run similar classes. Not every instructor teaches every available class, but most teach one or both of the above, or something similar.

If you have never fired a gun before, but are planning to own or shoot one, choose a class that offers live fire. This will get you off to a good safe start.

If you just want to be informed, or know a competent person who can take you to the range, an introductory safety course might suffice.

If you need to take a class in order to get a firearms license, be sure that the one you choose meets the requirement.

Other popular NRA classes:

  • Personal Protection In The Home - The basics of home defense and applicable law.
  • Personal Protection Outside The Home - Two part course covering basic and advanced skills and knowledge needed to react to a potentially violent encounter.
